I was looking in to Soft K lenses for four personal friends of mine who has had crosslinging... and it seems that the O2 (Oxygen)of these lens are one of the best when it comes to soft lenses (but not in the over-all contact lens options that we have... then the trouble is that you find that the O2 may be really good but the comfort very poor).

I think the major advantages of this soft k lens are as follows...

1) Softer that hard lenses and so less traumatic for the patient physically (on a kc cornea) and mentally to put in the eye.

2) they are thinker than regular soft lens... but the advantage is that they don't crumple/need straighting out when on the eye and also its easyer to handle as the lens is thinker.

However hard lens have better O2

The Dk of the Soft K (the measure od O2) is 29 ...usual soft lenses, the Dk ranges from 20 to 30.

Now the question I have been asking is... can these new soft lenses be any worse in its O2 than what is being prescribed now, with regards to sclerals (where O2 has to pass through saline and the lens) and piggybacking (where O2 has to pass through not one lens but two lens)???

If its deemed as ok to prescrible piggybacking and sclerals (of course with frequant check-ups for vigulance) for kc... then i think the O2 of soft k is ok as well...

I am only talking about the Oxygen (O2) flux and not any other variables when it comes to contacts for kc...

KC-Experience: 4x transplantiert, 3x an einem auge, immunsuppression wegen ständiger transplantatabstoßungen, glaukom bereits mehrmals operiert, beginnender katarakt an beiden augen. visus mit brille um die 35%. Kontaklinsenunverträglichkeit .
augen-op´s insges. 13x. bin bei prof. th. neuhann in behandlung.
5. transpl. steht in den starlöchern.??? mehr oder weniger. das 5. transplantat war bereits am anfang märz 08 gefunden worden. 2 h später, anruf vom Prof. er könne es nicht nehmen. jetzt muß ich also weiter warten.
nävus auf der netzhaut inoperabel, tumor in der orbita nähe des sehnerves.
visus bleibt erwiesenermaßen schlecht, bzw. verschlechtert sich zumindest in der nähe und an den äußeren gesichtsfeldrändern. visus scheint irgendwie zu stagnieren, komme gerade so zurecht, wobei das Lesen immer schwieriger wird.
Experience with eyeglasses / lenses: Sehr schnell wurden mir harte KC-Linsen angepaßt, die sich aber andauernd veränderten, so, daß der Anpasser gar nciht mehr nachgekommen ist.
Operationen: 1999 wurde die erste Keratoplastik gemacht. s.o. bei und von Prof. Thomas Neuhann. Alle anderen Keratoplastiken (mit wachsendem Vergnügen, ebenfalls vom Prof. Neuhann der sich absolut rührend um mich kümmert. Div. Trabekulektomien, Div. Cortisonspülungen....................alles zwar Operationen, aber immer irgendwie im Vorbeigehen.

Hi Sabine, the site is ready to go!!! lol and I welcome anyone to join in!!

I just think that the holes for oxygen to get in (in english its called fenestrations) that is not being looked at and is not included in the O2 Dk of the lens.

The lens is of high water content.. plus of course softer in your eye than a hard lens. I think they must be better in the oxygen department than with sclerals and piggybacks...

... a member at our site wrote to them as he lives in Hong Kong and could not get hold of these lenses... so he wrote to them and they sent him a fitting set... which he took to his opticians ...and which finally, he has contact lenses which gives him better vision and comfort than he had with hard lenses... he is really very happy... and he thinks more people should look in to these lenses... you can read "larry's" thread which he started called "soft Vs RGP's" on http://www.kcglobal.org
